A Little Vicarious Culture, Please!

I want to know what you're reading. And listening to. And baking. And thinking about. Poetry? Novels? Songs? Good food? I want to hear all about it. Help a culturally deprived sister out!

  1. I'm reading: Choosing to See by Mary Beth Chapman. It's the story of the wife of singer Steven Curtis Chapman, the adoption of their Chinese girls and the death of their adopted daughter Maria. (sob-fest!)

I'm listening to the quiet of the countryside all around. (lovely)

I'm also reading a cosy crime series 'Dandy Gilver series' by Catriona McPherson.

On the food front I have been making raspberry and strawberry jam with the absolute glut of fruit that has hit the fruit farms in the past week. Yesterday we ate homemade strawberry pie which was gorgeous!

Please don't be culturally deprived. Thanks for calling out for help when you need it. Keep smiling. I'm getting together a box of things for you and hopefully will have it organised before the end of the summer to send your way... it's taking me awhile! Bless you ~Steph xo

  2. I'm reading a few things - Letter Perfect by Cathy Marie Hake (Christian Romantic Fiction) and Bus Stops and Bicycles by Taryn Rose (Non-fiction for single women - written by a Melbournian!)

I've just been listening to Brooke Fraser - her song Lord of Lords because it was the song that inspired me on LF8R.

I haven't been cooking, but I have been watching Masterchef.

Can you tell me a little something that you'd like to have. I've been thinking of sending you something, but I'm not sure what.

I'm also thinking about my new job, which started today! After School Care at Heathdale. No kids today though, since it was a pupil free day. Bedlam begins tomorrow!

  3. I am pretending that I'm still overseas by listening to lots of Indonesian/Malay-language music. Some of it's pretty good. I'm reading "Oliver Twist" in preparation for teaching it in two weeks, "The Harmony Silk Factory" by Tash Aw as part of "Project Pretend I'm Still in Malaysia", and "In My Father's House" by Corrie Ten Boom as inspiration and comfort.

I'm thinking that it's time to go and cook myself dinner. Malay food, of course. There seems to be a trend.

  4. Hi Erin,

I've been reading A S Byatt - now up to part 4 "A Whistling Woman." It has been variously interesting, confusing, tedious -maybe because I'm missing having read lots of works she refers to, emotionally affecting. I just started "Love in the time of Cholera" one evening when I realised I left my other book at work. I'm also reading "Switch. When Change is Hard." by Dan and Chip Heath largely because R was reading it and I kept wanting to know what he was up to because he looked engrossed and was doing some thinking-staring. He generally only reads non-fiction.

I've been listening to whatever is on the radio and libravox podcasts of "A Tale of Two Cities" while going for a jog. I always think to myself while running all those people going past are thinking I'm listening to jogging music, when really I'm listening to the trials of poor Miss Manette and her family.

I'm baking...not much. I did purchase some speculative choc-chips, but nothing has come of it. I did make roast beef with baked potatoes last night if that helps you at all. I accidentally let the vegetable steamer boil dry and burnt the pan too. I can be a reasonable cook if I remember to pay attention.

I'm thinking about the Grad Certificate subject I'm studying. Last semester I got in touch with my inner accountant, now I'm trying to learn stuff about being a manager. Sometimes my brain doesn't work. Last night I was thinking about how this year I have managed to do scary and difficult things such as giving a puclic seminar to 80+ members of the public without freaking out too much. I felt pleased about conquering my fears.

    love from Sarah H

  5. That's what I'm talking about! Thanks everyone. I love hearing about your lives (as summarised by your reading and music choices). Thanks for sharing with me. Sarah, you're a gun. You'll be controlling the meteorology bureau in no time! x
